St. Mary's CE Primary Online Library

(This page is still being edited....please bear with us)

The videos in our Online Library enable our children to hear books read aloud and this is one of the most important activities for reading success. It provides children with a demonstration of phrased, fluent reading and develops the listener's interest in books and desire to be a reader.

Listening to others read books develops key understanding and skills, such as an appreciation for how a story is written and introduces book conventions, such as "once upon a time" and "happily ever after", and invites the listener into a conversation with the author.

Children can listen on a higher language level than they can read, so reading aloud makes complex ideas more accessible and exposes children to vocabulary and language patterns that are not part of everyday speech.  It exposes less confident readers to the same rich and engaging books that fluent readers read on their own, and entices them to become better readers.

PLEASE NOTE: This is a whole school library and caters for many different age ranges, from Nursery up to Year 6. Please make sure young children’s reading choices are supervised by an adult.
