Religious Education
At St. Mary's, the scheme we use to deliver R.E. is the Manchester Diocese Religious Education Syllabus for 2023-28.
The aims and purposes of religious education in this syllabus reflect those set out in the 2019 Church of England Statement of Entitlement. They are to enable pupils:
- to know about and understand Christianity as a diverse global living faith through the exploration of core beliefs using an approach that critically engages with biblical text.
- to gain knowledge and understanding of a range of religions and worldviews appreciating diversity, continuity and change within the religions and worldviews being studied.
- to engage with challenging questions of meaning and purpose raised by human existence and experience.
- to recognise the concept of religion and its continuing influence on Britain’s cultural heritage and in the lives of individuals and societies in different times, cultures and places.
- to explore their own religious, spiritual and philosophical ways living, believing and thinking.
As part of the scheme, children will:
- make sense of a range of religious and non-religious beliefs
- understand the impact and significance of religious and non-religious
beliefs - make connections between religious and non-religious beliefs, concepts,
practices and ideas studied
Please see the documents below for more information and a brief introduction to the scheme.

UNCRC Article 14 - Children can choose their own thoughts, opinions and religion, but this should not stop other people from enjoying their rights. Parents can guide children so that as they grow up, they learn to properly use this right.
