Personal, Social, Health Education and Relationships Education
Personal, Social, Health Education and Relationships Education at St Mary’s C.E. Primary School
At St Mary’s C.E. Primary School, Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE), including statutory Relationships and Health Education, is central to our mission to nurture the whole child. Rooted in our Christian ethos of Faith, Family and Future, our approach supports every child to grow as a confident, respectful and compassionate member of God’s loving family.
We are committed to providing a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment where all children are valued equally, regardless of background, belief or identity. Through PSHE, we promote mutual respect, dignity and understanding, and actively challenge prejudice, bullying and discrimination of any kind.
Our PSHE curriculum follows the Jigsaw Programme, a carefully sequenced, whole-school approach that ensures consistency, progression and age-appropriate learning from Early Years to Year 6. It helps children develop essential life skills, emotional literacy, resilience and a strong sense of self, while preparing them for the opportunities and challenges of modern life — both online and offline.
Relationships Education focusses on building healthy, respectful relationships, including friendships, family life and staying safe. Health Education supports children’s physical and mental wellbeing, encouraging healthy lifestyles, self-care and knowing where to seek help. Teaching is always sensitive, inclusive and aligned with statutory guidance, Church of England principles and our responsibilities under the Equality Act.
PSHE at St Mary’s is not just taught in lessons, but lived out every day through our relationships, worship, assemblies and Rights Respecting School ethos. Working in partnership with parents and carers, we aim to equip our children with the knowledge, values and confidence they need to flourish now and in the future.
